The Man Born to be King: Reflections on the life of Christ”

We are privileged to have Marj Mead* lead us today. Patti Pierce will assist.

During World War II, Dorothy L. Sayers was asked to write a series of plays on the life of Christ
for the BBC radio.  This twelve-part dramatic portrayal brought Jesus alive for the British war-
time listeners in a unique and compelling way.  Or as one man gratefully recounted: These
broadcasts have “made God and Jesus more real to me than ever before and helped me along the
difficult road to understanding."  Unfortunately, all too often in the midst of our busy lives, we
neglect to take full advantage of the God-given resource of imagination—particularly as it is
embodied in drama and story.  Indeed, when we look at scripture, we observe that Jesus himself
often taught with parables (a form of story).  Accordingly, in our Retreat time together, we will
listen to excerpts from two of these historic radio dramas and give ourselves an opportunity to
experience the impact of story.  Together, we will take time to reflect prayerfully upon these
dramatic retellings of the Gospel story—using the imaginative power of words to invite us anew
into a deeper encounter with the living Christ.

*Marj is the Associate Director of the Marion E. Wade Center at Wheaton College, Illinois.
