Saturday Seminar on November 15

The Gift of Story and Imagination: Awakening the Spiritual Heart

Lecturer: Marj Mead, co-author/editor of A Reader’s Guide Through the Wardrobe
and A Reader’s Guide to Caspian.

When we think of story, what may first come to mind is that reading is an enjoyable activity that offers us a welcome break from the busyness of our everyday life. But how often do we consider that story is a God-given resource that when understood rightly will not only bring us enjoyment, but also nurture our spiritual life? Indeed, when we look at Scripture, we observe that Jesus, himself, often taught with parables (a form of story). During this retreat, we will look together at why reading quality fiction actually helps us to see reality more clearly. We will also explore the various ways in which story and the imagination can help awaken our hearts to spiritual realities—profound eternal truths such as hope, beauty, courage, perseverance, and holiness. We will draw upon a variety of literary sources with a special emphasis upon C.S. Lewis’s Chronicles of Narnia and how he used his Narnian tales to embody his faith.

This seminary will include time for both lecture and time for personal reflection.
